During the Queen’s Speech last week, it was announced that the Queen would be passing a Bill for Electric Vehicles.
In this exciting step towards a greener future, the Bill outlined that it will be mandatory to offer charging points at all motorway services and fuel stations with the aim of encouraging the use of electric vehicles.
The Government has a target to have almost all vehicles on the roads to be zero-emissions by the year 2050. The addition of charging points at all motorway services and fuel stations hopes to encourage drivers to consider electric or hybrid vehicles when making new car choices.
As many drivers consider the requirement to charge a vehicle as an inconvenience, the availability of more charging points aims to quash the doubt in people’s minds.
The availability of more second-hand electric and hybrid cars is also bringing more vehicles onto the roads, as previously many perceived them to be too expensive to buy brand new.
Other improvements come in the form of the amount of distance that electric cars are able to now travel on a single battery charge. This has been encouraging for drivers and with increasing availability of charging points as well as the speed of recharging on the increase, there is sure to be an increase in demand.
That said, there are over 36 million vehicles on the road, of these only 100,000 have been purchased with the help of the Government’s Plug-in Car Grant.
