Road Sign Removal
In 2013 there were approximately 4.57 million road signs on UK roads, however last month the Government gave local councils the opportunity to remove unnecessary road signs that could be ‘distracting’ divers all over the country.
There is estimated to be more than double the amount of road signs in the country than there were in the early 1990’s. Now the Government has handed over the necessary powers to local authorities to take down those that could be distracting, we may see many disappearing from our roads very soon.
Road signs such as ‘New Road Layout’ ahead will have ‘remove by’ dates on the back of them. Once this date has been reached it will b the responsibility of the local authority to remove the necessary signs from the roads.
The Government states that this decision will save the tax payer more than £30 million by 2020, this amount includes the cost of lighting the road signs after dark and will in turn save light pollution and energy.
